KEEPING WATCH

I often tape a small postcard of a painting by one of my favorite artist on my easel or on my still life stand.

Rembrandt is most often my first choice.

Here he is KEEPING WATCH, he reminds to think big, to not get caught up in the little things.

It is the visual reminder of what GOOD really looks like.

Most often the viewer would never know that the postcard is there, but with Keeping Watch  it found its way into the composition and became a part of the gesture and movement designed into the painting.

The cloth and large copper pot begin the movement as the light travels from high and above. It then leads the eye to the simple small Mexican vase. Its simple pattern indicated, light seems at its fullest,  detail  lost through brilliance.

The eye then is directed down, to the postcard, here below the main action Rembrandt keeps watch, to the play of form above.

Many of my paintings have this quality of above and below, but often the space in the background is also very important, here I spend much time and am searching for a quality of space, air, and a very quiet beauty.
